2003-2005
This work grew out of my creative research during the Jerome Foundation Travel Grant in 2003 where I furthered my education at the Florence Academy of Art. I returned from Italy to create a body of portraits and corollary charcoal drawings expanded from my painting series, "Rural Subjects".
The 'Italy Drawing' was completed as part of a course at the academy, where I was gifted with the knowledge of the 'sight-size method' of observation alongside artists from around the world. This drawing took approximately 50 hours, and the travel grant created the opportunity for me to slow down and develop new/expanded skills while living in Florence for three months.
